about

This was a pivotal event in my musical development, perhaps the most pivotal. Station wagoner Peter Kowald (living his childhood fantasy of roadtripping America) had just held a life-changing/affirming solo double bass recital on a Sunday afternoon for a gaggle of us packed into Flicker Theatre's listening room. Knowing Colin, Blake, and I were to be Peter's accompanists for the second set was (speaking for myself) thrilling and a hair terrifying. Without exaggeration though, this was the day I learned it is possible to set aside doubt and go into the moment as a performer. But the real lesson is something to do with going into the moment at all times, the nuances of which continue to unfold. I am so pleased and honored to present this music to the world, never before heard, unless you were one of the attendees this very good day. (The tour documentarian's equipment wasn't working during the Athens stop; make a note to seek other performances, all amazing.) You can hear the support of the audience come through strongly over the course of the recording, such was Peter's appeal.

Dedicated to the memory of German double bassist Peter Kowald. A powerful positive presence for many, many listeners, and one of my most important teachers. And thank you, as always, for listening.
