about

Soooo, this was a big undertaking! And very full! I can't believe it actually happened. Time was different in 2002. With no smartphones to check, players and audience alike settled in for the duration. I truly can't imagine today putting together an assemblage of musicians this large with such an ambitious scope of stylistic wayfaring...and I'm grateful to the musicians and listeners for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Some of these moments are scripted, and much is just the serendipity of great ears and hearts as it unfolded. (I provided some detailed charts, some verbal instructions, and threw caution to the very capable wind, using everything I'd absorbed through my vicarious UGA graduate school enmeshment and then some.) Absolutely stellar players on display that knew just where to it take it. With this many fab cats, there's bound to be a lot of 70s car chase grooves and much more mix-a-lots. The microphones nearly melted at times! (The distortion at full tilt seems to be the diaphragms struggling under the weight of the sound pressure levels.) I know we played at least one other show (during Athfest) in the hot sun, but this icy eve remains our only audio document. Athens, Georgia's finest letting it all hang out. Check the blues jam at the end, a form seldom associated with me (though it retains a flexible notion of intonation :-). It's a lot to digest, but I'll consider burps a grand compliment. Thanks as always for listening.
