Dustin Wiebe is an ethnomusicologist from Winnipeg, Manitoba. We met each other this spring under his direction of the University of Georgia's Gamelan Chandra Natha program. Dustin was selected to get our Athens Balinese music program off the ground, and he inspired something wonderful in all participants and listeners...I was honored to be among them in both capacities. It was a monumental task with a steep learning curve, and Dustin did marvelously. But that's not all. In addition to his conducting and stewardship, Dustin is a fine guitarist of endless invention, and I'm glad to say he has become a friend. With friendship and music in mind we got together for a recording session. Starting with just a "let's go" we played the two songs on this album. No discussion, only a trust that we'll make something cool and heartfelt. It's easy and life-affirming to work with such a confident, lyrical performer. And to add a bit of savory garnish our performances were translated in real-time into MIDI data. (Dustin's guitar on track 1; mine on track 2. The lo-fi bleeps and bloops are a meta-energized reading of what we did, and with a bit of post-production finesse add fun and timbral depth to the proceedings while highlighting Dustin's way with line.
