about

towards a universal music...

That's the tag on the back of this CD which originally came out in 2002. I've been digging into the archival crates, which is truly like time travel. In retrospect, what a huge project it was to realize The View You Never Get. Our good friend Sándor Szabó came from Hungary for a series of shows and studio sessions with his 16-string guitar sounding like no other. I read about his work in Acoustic Guitar magazine and tracked down a copy of Soul of the Tree, not the simplest task back then, and almost impossible to find now. I'm so glad I got to hear the music (it's amazing), and so glad I sent Sándor a letter, and so glad he was fired up about the prospect of coming here. His playing evokes the Eastern influence on Hungarian culture with a modern, worldly outlook. This was an unexpected but good fit with the music we were making in the SS Puft and Georgia Guitar Quartets (these two groups also being unusual yet successful collaborative partners; what a talented bunch!). And Sándor's strong presence and playful intensity made a positive impression on all of us. Luckily we had a steady hand and ears in Jeff Rackley, who was a big part of these years of discovery and unbridled creativity. I'd like to think we're still moving towards a universal music, celebrating the particular and elevating the spirit as we go. Please enjoy and thanks for listening.
